2nd grade Syllabus
Daily Schedule
School Begins: Children take care of their personal belongings. The first bell rings at 7:55 A.M., followed by the morning assembly Mondays through Thursdays. Every Friday, students should be prepared to attend Mass. Students begin working quickly after the second bell, so please ensure that your child arrives at school on time every day.
Recess and Lunch: Recess takes place from 10:00-10:15 and lunch takes place from 11:30-12:15. Your child must bring snacks and lunch to school daily (with the exception of lunch on Fridays). Please make sure it is healthy and easy for your child to eat.
Dismissal: Dismissal on Monday through Thursdays at 3:00 PM. Fridays, students will be dismissed at 12:30 PM.
Curriculum
The 2nd grade Math and ELA curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Standards, which may be viewed at http://www.corestandards.org. The new Religion Standards come from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, while Social Studies and Science stem from the California State Standards, and stepping into NextGen Science Standards.
Religion: The second graders will be preparing for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
Reading: Our goal is to develop fluent and comprehensible readers. We will be doing read alouds, shared reading, interactive reading, guided reading, and independent reading.
Math: A variety of math concepts are addressed during our Math meeting, including number concepts, skip counting, money, patterns, time, calendar concepts, temperature, and word problems. During math, students work in whole groups, small groups, and independently to master math skills. We will be using the Saxon Math 3 curriculum.
Science and Social Studies: Students study various topics in each area. In science, we will look at life science, earth science, and physical science. Social studies will cover past and present, map skills, government, economics, and citizenships. Both subjects will incorporate project-based learning.
Physical Education: Students go to P.E. every Thursday. Please make sure that your child wears his/her proper P.E. uniform on those days. The P.E. teacher, Mr. Arnone, will be responsible for assigning the grades in P.E.
Music: Students have music class with Mr. Avendaño every Tuesday for thirty minutes. Mr. Avendaño will be responsible for assigning grades in Music.
Art/STEAM Elective: Art projects and assignments will be integrated across all subject areas, along with specific art time on Fridays. Various forms of art including visual and performing arts (music, theatre, dance) will be introduced to students to further explore different contexts studied in other curriculum areas and in our current society. Fridays at 11:30-12:30 will be STEAM Elective hour, in which students in grades 2-8 will be participating in a range of courses connected to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and/or Math.
Communication
Communication between home and school is vital for student success, and I welcome the opportunity to speak with each of you this year. There are several means by which we will stay in contact throughout the year.
Report Cards/Progress Reports: At Immaculate Heart of Mary School, we use SchoolSpeak to communicate students’ grades throughout the year. Unofficial progress reports will be published at the beginning of every month, beginning in October, while official progress reports will be published three times a year. Report cards will also be published three times a year.
Parent-Teacher Conferences: Conferences will be scheduled during December and as needed throughout the year.
Email and Phone: If there are any other times you would like to talk to me, please feel free to send a note with your child to school, message me through the Remind app (Class Code: @kf23g8f), email me at [email protected], or call the school at (323) 663-4611.
Student Planners: I will use the student planners to communicate your child’s homework, as well as their behavior and effort. We will be using a color system as follows:
Purple (highest color): Outstanding effort has been shown consistently throughout the day.
Blue: Student has made multiple good choices throughout the day.
Green: (where students begin their day): Students are ready to learn.
Yellow: A warning has been issued regarding student effort or behavior.
Orange: A consequence has been taken as results of student’s actions.
Red: (lowest color): A note will be sent home in regards to unacceptable student behavior.
Students will move their colors up or down throughout the day. I will note your child’s color in their planners. Please sign the planners daily and return them to school to acknowledge that they are checked at home.
Daily Reading Requirement: Students must read at least two books per school night (or two chapters of a chapter book). Book reports will be assigned beginning in October. Specific instructions will be sent home on how to accurately complete the book reports.
Homework Folders: Homework and classwork that can be kept at home will be put in the left pocket, and tests or paperwork that need to be signed and returned will be put in the right pocket. Please go over these assignments with your child.

Homework
Homework will be assigned on a daily basis Monday through Thursday and occasionally on Fridays. Revise your child’s homework and help if your child needs help, but please do not do the work for him/her. Second graders are responsible for writing down homework assignments, completing the assignments, and coming to school with the completed work. Students will not be allowed to call home for forgotten homework.
Birthdays
Birthday Treats: You may send in birthday treats to school for your child’s birthday. Please keep it simple and include our entire class, and be prepared with any napkins, utensils, or plates as necessary. Treats should only be for our class and should not be given to students in other classes, unless you bring it for the entire class. Siblings are the only exception for this. If you wish to have a birthday party outside of school, it is school policy not to allow invitations to be distributed at school unless all students are invited.
I hope that this website has been informative for you and that you can feel comfortable knowing the expectations in your child’s classroom. Please, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, contact me using any of the methods provided on this website.
